|Jatukam Ramathep is the two guardian deities of Phra Brom That Nakhon Si Thammarat (The great Pagoda which contains relics of Buddha at Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Southern Thailand) that is Tao Khattukham and Tao Ramathep. Since the olden days, Brahminism believe that both deities are the top-class deity who exists in all regions of Thailand. But when Buddhism was expanded to Southeast Asia region, Tao Khattukham and Tao Ramathep was prefered to be the guardian deity of the Relics Pagoda and was renamed for an auspiciousness to be Tao Jatukham. When there was a ceremony to redestine the city horoscope of Nakhon Si Thammarat province in B.E.2530 (A.D.1987), enshrined at the leaves of an entrance to get on to the Relics Pagoda since then.
Implication and Believe
According to Nakhon Si Thammarat folklore, Jatukham is Phra Seua Muang, the guardian deity of the city. Jatu (Ja-dtu) means four and Kham (Kha-ma) means the territory of a country. The definition implies the territory that has the four guardian deities resides and watching over all four directions (north, east, west, south) to protect the city. Ramathep is Phra Sohng Muang. The word Ram comes from Phra Ram which means Narayana or known in another name as Vishnu who has incarnated to be the king. The word Thep means deity,the definition implies the supposed angel king. Ramathep or Phra Sohng Muang is the governor or the king. Later on, both deities had merged together to become one, known as Jatukham Ramathep until nowadays.
Formerly, there is a belief that Jatukham Ramathep was the king of Nakhon Si Thammarat kingdom. His official name was Phra Chao Chantharaphanu. He was the second king of Sri Thamma Sokaraj dynasty. Believed that he has a dark skin, and was a great warrior. After he had firmly established Srivichai kingdom, he was glorified as Dark King of the South Sea and Pya Phangpagan. Later on he has completed a science calls Jatukhamasart and after that he had accumulated merit and prayed with his concentrated mind to be Bodhisattva in order to help all humankind from any distress.
Nowadays, Jatukham Ramathep is widely respected by people due to they believe in his supernatural power. According to an inscription on the ancient stone inscription of Srivijaya stated that His power is like the sun and moon that brighten the earth from darkness.
To pray for something you wish from Jatukham Ramathep, there are three strict conditions i.e.
1.Only pray for possible thing that is not go against the tradition and morality.
2.When your wish is fulfilled, you must keep you words you have taken an oath with him.
3.Then, you should make merits and dedicate your merits you have done to Jatukham Ramathep.
The most important thing is not just only pray for his help but you have to make merits for yourself i.e. giving alms, observing the precepts, and practicing meditation etc.
Background of first creating Jatukham Ramathep amulet
Jatukham Ramathep deity in the form of powder amulet was originated in B.E.2530 (A.D.1987) by Khoon Phantharak Rachadej. The significance in design on the amulet is the model of Bodhisattva Awalohgeedtaehsuan who represents Jatukham Ramathep, the deity king of Srivijaya.
Until B.E.2538 (A.D.1995), there was a natural phenomenon that is solar eclipse in Thailand which Thai astrology believed that it is an inauspicious event. This caused the stream of information about Rahu Kin Muang (Rahu swallowing the town). Many people were wide-awake to look for an amulet to wear in order to protect themselves.
At the begin of B.E.2550 (A.D.2007) Jatukham amulet was widely found public favor in Thailand and neighbouring countries. This caused the first creating Jatukham amulet B.E.2530 highly expensive above 40 millions baht from 49 baht at the beginning.
